Should I ask if I am his girlfriend?

by Elizabeth
(Green Lake, WI, USA)

So I have been talking to this guy for four months and finally met him in spur of the moment trip. He lives in Kentucky and I live in Wisconsin. We hit it off really well and plan to meet up again. I asked him if I should take myself off the dating market and he said it was up to me. Does this mean he considers me his girl friend, should I come right out and ask him, should I wait to meet up with him again? I mean I know I am not going to go to facebook and change my relationship status because that ball is in his court and I don't want to freak the guy out. Just wondering how I should go about this. We are both in our mid to upper twenties.

Answer:

I would focus more on developing the relationship as opposed to labeling it.

You can call the relationship whatever you like, but until you both have deep feelings for one another, you're not really a couple, and there is no real reason to be exclusive.

You nailed it on the head. The only thing labeling the relationship might accomplish, at this point, is freaking the guy out. So, don't worry about it.

Instead, plan some more times to see each other. Check out our ideas for a first date and plan a date where you guys can get to know each other better.

Don't worry about the girlfriend / boyfriend labels. When it seems right to discuss exclusivity, you'll know.
