5 Romantic Love Stories, That Happen to be Great Books
A lot of readers ask me, "what are the best romantic love stories to read?" Or, "what's a good romantic book to give as a gift?" This is a hard question for me to answer because I like my literature like I like my women--subtle, beautiful, and just a little bit weird. So... Needless to say, I tend to think most "romantic love stories" are pretty much crap in a crap basket. But, every now and then, the stars align, frogs begin to fall from the sky, and somebody writes an amazing book that also happens to be romantic as hell.
The Princess Bride - By William Goldman
Hey, that's a movie! That's true... But, remember how the movie was framed by Grandpa reading to the sickly Fred Savage? Yup, that was a real book, written by the real William Goldman. If you liked the movie, you'll love the book. Romance! Adventure! True Love! Who could ask for more? Nobody. Because this is one of the best love stories ever written.
The French Lieutenant's Women - By John Fowles
Most philosophers probably think The French Lieutenant's Women is one of the best love stories ever written. The novel takes place in Victorian England, but has a modern existentialist narrating and playing around with the story. Not everyone will love this book, but, for those who like their romance with a dash of self referential post modernism, this is the one for you!
The Unbearable Lightness of Being - By Milan Kundera
Philosophers probably also love The Unbearable Lightness of Being. But, though this book poses some interesting philosophical questions, it's prose reads easily and beautifully. It is easily one of the most romantic books I have ever read. Why do we continuously search for romantic and sexual connections? Do these relationships give meaning to our lives?
Love Story - By Erich Segal
Love Story truly lives up to it's title. Two people from drastically different backgrounds grow to love each other so much that they sacrifice their life plans in order to be together. This is one of the most romantic love stories ever written. However, with great love comes the possibility of great sadness. Just sayin...
In Watermelon Sugar - By Richard Brautigan
Most of Richard Brautigan's works contain an indescribable romantic-ness. In Watermelon Sugar is no exception. The story takes place in a strange, phantasmagorical land where the sun shines a different color each day of the week and tiger's talk. This is just one of those books you have to read to understand. It is odd, beautiful, and romantic.
