Nothing is more romantic than creating your own romance. If your place is nice enough, and you know how to cook, consider hosting your date for dinner. Open a bottle of decent wine, light some candles, and try to present the food as nicely as possible. Putting effort into a nice meal is so much more sexy than paying out the ass for it.
If you're lucky enough to live near a body of water, consider the possibility of a sunset cruise. If you're not prone to sea sickness, a pleasant night out on the water can be very enchanting. Just make sure its not one of those booze cruises... Nothing spoils a date more than college freshman dancing to Beyonce, while a guy named Chad pukes off the back of the boat.
Most jazz clubs are just naturally drenched in romance. The music is usually never too loud, allowing you to whisper sweet nothings into your lover's ear. Sip a nice Pino nior, and let the longing horns serenade you into romantic bliss.
One great romantic date idea is to take some dance lessons. Lots of clubs that feature a particular type of dancing (Salsa, Shag, Tango, etc...), will offer free or inexpensive dance lessons before the doors officially open. Opera has gotten a bad rep over the years for being melodramatic and boring, but don't discount its romantic weight. If you're not real familiar with opera, i suggest finding out which productions are being performed near you, and then reading the entire Wikipedia entry on that particular opera. Decide then whether or not you think it would make for an appropriate date.
If you want to truly impress a date, then you have to know how to give a good massage. Light some candles, bust out the lavender scented massage oil, and make that romance happen! Or, if you're not confident in your massaging abilities, or if you just want in on the action, you can always go to a spa and pay for a couple's massage.
Humans have a primordial draw towards fire. It excites all of our senses, while educing calm at the same time. When planning a romantic date, see if a fire can be included in the itinerary. It could be a romantic restaurant with a fire place, or a nice campfire out in the woods. As long as its not your house burning down, nothing engenders romance more than flame.
Being able to survey a large area of space is, for some reason, very appealing and romantic. I suppose it gives us a sense of perspective and place, while also being a generally beautiful sight. If you live in a city, consider taking your date to the top floor of a building for a drink and dessert.
