Ode to a Life’s Last Love Unrequited

by Wayne Mclean
(Brisbane, Australia)

My ambition is gone
It means nothing without love
I surrender to the failure of another broken dream
The hopeful dream of love
Unrequited

And as I realized that you didn’t feel
I couldn’t believe my fate
I looked around me desperately
To see the couples holding court
With love
Requited

I couldn’t let you go
And I couldn’t have you
I just let it all unfold
And let it singe my soul
And let it kill all faith in love
Ever being so

So shattered now I seek escape
From a love sown solely within
Never forged in your heart or mind
Never real for me to taste and feel
Merely a wish thought
Summoned here and then sent sadly to the stars
