Not sure if he's interested

I am attracted to this guy I work with, but I am pretty shy.

He has asked me about my weekend plans several times, made me laugh, light flirting going on, playful banter. It's been a couple months and he has yet to make a move.

Today, I asked him about his plans for the weekend, and he said he was "maybe taking this chick out" I said Oh sounds exciting, he said "yeah she's been calling me". I was floored, I really thought he liked me. The rest of the day was normal, we made jokes, caught him staring at me as usual. I was transferred to another job, and now I'm wondering should I message him with my number, or what??/

Did he tell me about this "date" to see my reaction, I am baffled.

If you want to go out with him, you should definitely send this guy your number. He pretty much told you to.

"Yeah she's been calling me". He's obviously the type of guy that's OK with the lady making the initial moves early on.

Also, by the way he described his date, as a "chick" thats "been calling me", he was basically saying, "yeah, i'm going out with this girl because she's sort of insisting, but i'd much rather be going out with you."

So yeah, he may have been feeling out your reaction. Also, he might be aware of the fact that the threat of competition might make you more attracted to him, and might be the thing to spurn you into action.

Which, it seems, you have.

So, give it a shot. I bet you've got yourself a date.
