love?

by aneel
(pakistan)

I'm in love with this girl and i think she loves me as well. I wanted to get married, but her mother is against me. She's still with me for the time being, but she doesn't want to marry me or be with me because of her mother and thinks if I continue, I'll get hurt in the end.

Does she love me?

ANSWER

Hey Aneel,

This is difficult to know. In America, girls (and boys) usually don't think twice about dismissing the wishes of their parents to do what they really want. I'm thinking that in Pakistan, the parent - child relationship may be a little different than it is here.

But that's neither here nor there... Forget the question of love for a second. Lets just assume she likes you a lot. As a human being with free will, she has the choice to either obey her mother's wishes, or disregard them to do what she wants. Whatever she chooses, Aneel, you have to respect.

If you love her... Tell her. If you want to marry her... Ask her.

She may choose you, she may not. If she decides she would rather not upset her mother, you're going to have to let her go and move on.

As we say over here, there are many fish in the sea. You'll meet someone new.
