Long Distance? Internet? Help!

Okay, first of all I want to thank whoever helps me out with this situation. (:
My name is Chelsea and I am 17. My boyfriends name is Zane and he is 18. We met over the Internet a while back and I've always felt a connection with him.
I was always told that meeting people over the Internet isn't safe at all and I know that. I'm taking precations the best way I can with that situation. Yet we grew closer and closer somehow and I think I am or already falling in love with him.
He says the same. We text and talk all the time over the phone. I'm still a little concerned with the "meeting over the Internet".
I'm just not sure if it's safe for me to continue. He lives 14 hours away from me. Part of me says that it's a big deal for us to be that far away and unable to see each other at this moment. But the other part says just relax and everything will work itself out.
I just don't really know what to do. When I graduate high school next year I would like to drive and seem him. I'm just not sure if that's the best idea. Can someone please help me decide if I'm making a huge mistake?
I need to know what to do in situations like mine. Thank you so much.
Answer:
Take baby steps.
Why not start video chatting? You've IMed no doubt, you've talked on the phone. Why not take it to the next logical point and do some video chatting.
The equipment required is cheap if you don't already have it.
There is no way to know, for sure, what this person actually looks like without doing this. Also, it'll just be a nice way to "hang out" despite your long distance relationship.
Good Luck.
