Keeps bring up the past

by Martha
(Williamsburg, Va)

My husband keeps bringing up my past mistake(an affair),esp. when we have conflict or disagree on something. He has never forgiven me even though I apologize to him over and over. It keeps me depressed and anxious and unable to move on. This has been going on for 20yrs and I can't take it anymore. He interrogates me and verbally abuses me to keep my self-esteem low.He travels and I love being alone and find myself feeling scared of him at times. His opinion matters more than mine. I use to go along with him to keep peace but now I'm not. He now is abusive toward my 15yr. old daughter at times. What should I do about this 28yr old marriage????

What should you do, Martha? You need to divorce this guy ASAP.

First, let me absolve you from your past sins. It was 20 years ago. You've apologized. Your husband isn't acting like a shithead because of your affair, he's just using it as an excuse for his poor behavior and to make you feel guilty.

So, forget about your old affair. That shouldn't even be in the picture here.

From what you've said, it seems like there is little to salvage from your relationship. You hate being around him, and he scares you.

Most importantly Martha, it is your responsibility to protect yourself and your daughter. There is no good reason to stay in a relationship with someone who is physically or verbally abusive. For your own well being, and the well being of your daughter, you should strongly consider getting a divorce.

Now, you can't and shouldn't go through this alone. You need professional and local help. Talk to family members and friends, and get there help and consolation. Also, consider calling Virginia's Domestic Violence Action Alliance (http://www.vsdvalliance.org: 1 800 838 8238), or another local organization.

Don't stay with this guy simply because you've been married for 28 years. You need to open a new chapter in your life for the sake of you and your daughter.

Good luck.
