French Love Quotes
The French know something about romance. We compiled these French love quotes so that, together, we can learn from the masters.
A good friend who knows quite a bit about french literature helped me put this list of romantic quotes together. She warned me that, though the french are a romantic breed, they're also a bit cynical when it comes to love. So, if you like your romance with a dash of bitter reality, you've come to the right place. And, as usual, each quote is followed by my sardonic commentary.
Love Libraries:

"L'amour est la poésie des sens." - Honoré de Balzac Love is the poetry of the senses. For a man with such an unfortunate last name, he's very good with his words.
"Aimer, ce n'est pas se regarder l'un l'autre, c'est regarder ensemble dans la même direction." - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Being in love is not looking at one another, but looking together in the same direction.
This is good advice. Once you're old and ugly you won't want to look at each other anyway.
"C'est à partir de toi que j'ai dit oui au monde." - Paul Éluard It was beginning with you that I said yes to the world.
This french love quote is confusing... What exactly did the world ask Mr. Éluard that required his affirmation?
"C'est cela l'amour, tout donner, tout sacrifier sans espoir de retour." - Albert Camus That's love: giving everything, sacrificing all without hope of returns.
Is he talking about love, or bailing out AIG? Bu Dum Ching! Thank you, thank you, i'll be here all night.
"La cœur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît point." - Pascal The heart has its reasons that reason ignores completely.
My ex-girlfriend must have had a really big heart. Zing.
"Aimer, c'est préférer un autre à soi-même." - Paul Léautaud Love is preferring another to yourself.
He's talking about looks, right?
"Aimer, c'est avoir du plaisir à voir, toucher, sentir par tous les sens, et d'aussi près que possible un objet aimable qui nous aime." - Stendhal Love is finding pleasure in seeing, touching, feeling through all the senses, being as close as possible to a lovable object that loves us.
Alright, that's just nice. No pithy comments this time. Well played Stendhal, well played. And now, to end things on the most romantic note possible, a french love quote for the finest of love letters...
"Plus on aime une maîtresse, et plus on est près de la haïr." -Every French Man The more you love a mistress, the closer you are to hating her.
What can i say, the french love their mistresses.
...for a while at least.
