For Bozhidar
by Primrose Reid
(Jamaica)
In the distance I saw him.
He looked over his shoulder and smiled at me.
His eyes said, "I love no other more."
We were young,
And all the seas couldn't stop our hearts uniting.
Gladly, we left our homes to share a life in a foreign land.
We failed a test,
And youth took hold of me
And made me tear your heart apart.
Did I kill you?
Did you take your own life
To stop yourself from loving me?
Could my love have saved you?
Us?
Did you allow the tides of sadness to take away your love for me?
With no answers, I walk this land searching for you.
I see a being with your shell but the heart's rhythm isn't yours.
I know him not because I don't see you, my love.
In his words and glances I don't see or feel your warmth,
Your passion.
All I see is a man who time and age has changed.
I'll sit and rest my feet awhile.
I have far to go
With you buried in my heart.
A lifetime of regrets lie ahead.
The dirt road I can see in the distance.
This journey I must take alone since you are gone.
