First Date Birthday Gift ideas

by Jenny
(Burbank, Ca)

I feel like I should buy him something to make the occasion. He is turning 42. We both have two kids and our divorces were final a few months ago. He have spoken on the phone for several hours, but tomorrow we will meet and go out for dinner. I assume that he should still pay, but I am deciding the place. A card just doesn't seem like the right fit. Any ideas on what else I can do? He is an orthodontist, so he doesn't eat sweets. In case you were thinking to make a cake or cookies. Thanks!

Answer:

You can't buy somebody a real gift on the first date. It just doesn't make any sense. Even if it is his birthday. If you get him anything, it's got to be small; Something that acknowledges that it is his birthday, but doesn't seem like the type of gift you would get for someone you know well.

How about instead of getting him a gift, go behind his back and tell the waitstaff at the restaurant that it is his birthday, and ask what they can do special for him. They will come sing and bring him some desert. It will probably be free.

He'll like that. You will have acknowledged his birthday, and done something unexpected, while not going too far out of your way, or spending much money, etc...

Good Luck.
